Sunshine Kolsch

An ale can lager but a lager can’t ale! This is exactly what a Kolsch style lager is.

To compete with lagers (bottom-fermented) beers that began to appear in Cologne, Germany during the 17th century, brewers from Cologne came up with this style.

Brewed using top-fermenting yeast, this light yellow, straw-like hybrid of a lager & an ale is first fermented warm with an ale yeast and then lagered! That is, stored cold for a long time. Cold conditioning clarifies the beer and makes it clear and helps subdue the fruity esters that are a hallmark of ales thereby making them more lager-like – crisp, refreshing with a slight fruitiness.

Sun shines on the brave and for us, in this sunny weather, it is Sunshine Kolsch style lager indeed!
