Bombay Porter

Our Beers
Bombay Porter

This dark beer originated in London in the 1800s and derives its name from the hard-working folk who worked as porters and loved to drink this beer. Almost black in colour with a creamy head, this beer is roasty and has caramel & toffee notes that provided nourishment after a long day of laborious work.

However, the porter was expensive to make but with the invention of the malt-roaster it became more affordable and even more popular. Prior to the invention, the cost of making the dark beer from brown malt was high as brown malt was poorly roasted and that led to poor sugar extraction. Hence, more brown malt was used. After the invention of the malt-roaster, breweries could use a small portion of very highly roasted malt with pale malt that gave a very good extract of sugar. This reduced the cost of production. Cheaper raw material led to lower prices for the beer and resulted in a higher consumption.

London Porter is the inspiration for our Bombay Porter and, just like the 1800s, we have used our own malt-roaster that has been a part of our brewery since inception in 2014 to roast the malts for this brew. When we started brewing in 2014, imports were costly, so we bought a malt-roaster and began roasting our own malts and we continue to do so. Perhaps, we owe a big ‘thank you’ to Daniel Wheeler for inventing the malt-roaster in 1817!

After a long day of laborious work, we are happy to porter around a barrel of this dark, luscious brew and are quite sure that folks in Bombay would do the same.
