Power Cut Reserve

Our Beers
Power Cut Reserve

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade! Or, in our case, a one-of-a-kind brew!

Since 2014, when we first started brewing, load shedding has been scheduled for Fridays in MIDC Dombivli where our brewery is situated. This means that we can’t brew, package or undertake any activity as there is no electricity. We considered getting a generator but the thought of burning Diesel and, the resulting pollution from it, dissuaded us.

We learned to live with the scheduled load shedding. Beers remained cold (perhaps dropped by a few degrees) as the tanks are insulated and the cold room is also very well insulated. So, no worries at all.

However, the load shedding / power cuts became unpredictable and we found ourselves amidst brews that got stuck which had to be drained. But these power cuts are of the worst kind during the monsoons. Last year, we had 4 days of no power supply and quite a few batches were drained. Even this year, the same thing happened. We nearly got a generator on the last day but as the power was restored, we didn’t have to as we suffered through most of it.

But something exciting happened with our brewers this year!

Our brewers did not want to drain a batch and hence proceeded to collect the wort (resultant sweet liquid extracted by mashing malted barley and hot water). Since the pumps were not working and we couldn’t rinse the grains to dilute the collected wort as per recipe, the wort became was very strong. We went ahead and let it cool overnight with crossed fingers and added yeast next day. Fermentation went well and since it was a very malty, rich and intensely strong beer, we also aged it on oak chips.

The beer, casually referred to as PC Reserve by our brewers is ready for release as Power Cut Reserve. We plan to release 1 keg every month to see how it ages and changes over time. Come, join us at Gateway Taproom and celebrate life that finds a way to make lemonade when served lemons.

Malty & complex with subtle sourness, this pale ale, aged on oak, is a limited release that is to be sipped slowly and savoured.
